I would say it is more like Max Planck said, that new ideas succeed not because the supporters have conviced the detractors, but because the detractors have simply died and a new generation has grown up that is "used to" the new concepts.
On the other hand, sometimes great and undeniable discoveries simply happen, seemingly by accident, and are more quickly incorporated.
