In India spiritual aspirants often follow both a physical guru and a chosen ideal (which is usually a well-known mythological character chosen by the aspirant himself). In deep meditation the two merge in each other and finally both dissolve.
Yukteswar was Yogananda's guru in the physical world, and his chosen deity was Krishna (as is not unusual in India).
That is my reading. On another page of the book however Yogananda says that Lahiri Mahasaya is actually his 'astral guru'.
