Every religious war involves territory disputes, so the fact that there are concomitant territory disputes here does not paper over the essentially religious character of this conflict. The two nations haven't been at loggerheads for 50 years over real estate; they aren't ready to go nuclear over a bit of land.

Simplistic though it may be, then, to say the conflict is "religious" is much more accurate than to say that it is "economic" or "territorial." The latter would be like saying the conflict between Sharia globalists and the U.S. is "political."
