But awareness does not at all entail awareness of self, or of the proposition "I am." I think you may be confusing different orders of awareness. To be aware, you don't have to be aware that you (the self, the ego, or whatever) are aware. You just have to be aware.
E.g., when I meditate, I am aware of being (among perhaps other things). That does not mean, it does not require, that I am aware that it is I who is aware of being. I have simply directed my awareness at being, and in the process lost sight of myself.
There is no need to get into a discursis about the metaphysics of the self, here: surely “I am aware” means something, and it means something distinct from “I am aware that it is I who is aware.” I think you are confounding the two.
