Subject: Inter-racial marriage contradiction
In reply to: Eponymous - 27 April 2002 's message, "SRF rule - Ketch, decided to start this on a new thread" on 06:51

On the second part of your post, I don't know what the situation was. There is certainly a contradiction in the reports of Yogananda's actions.

In 1931 Yogananda blessed the inter-racial wedding, and performed a second wedding ceremony. He is reported to have said "Miss Spencer is white and Bramacharee has a brown skin, but race and color will be forgotten in universal brotherhood. East meets west in this happy marriage of two members of the Caucasian race."

Nerode stayed with the organisation for a further eight years, and the marriage seems to have been accepted, as was their mixed race son.

In 1939 Nerode either left or was expelled, and Yogananda is reported to have told the press that the inter-racial marriage was against the organisations rules.

Shortly afterwards Nerode issued a writ for $500,000 against Yogananda. The inter-racial marriage does not appear to have been the reason for their split, but simply the reason Yogananda gave to the press.

I do not know if Yogananda's organisation ever had a rule against inter-racial marriage. I cannot remember ever seeing anything about such a rule other than the newspaper reports after the split with Nerode.

I do not know why this contradiction exists.
