I was introduced to the Sikhs through the AY. As you probably already know the chant Oh God Beautiful is Yoganandaji's translation of Guru Nanak's composition.
Also I live in an area in Southern California which is home to many diverse ethnic groups, including a large Sikh population. Very near the SRF Hollywood Temple is a new, fairly large Sikh temple. So they are definitely "laying down roots" here in the good 'ol USA.
In fact today's edition of the LA Times had a big article discussing the abuse that has been handed out since the bombing to Sikhs, mistakenly thought to be Muslims, because both where a turban. But the Sikh in the article pointed out that some Muslims do in fact where turbans but their's don't cover the entire head, while the Sikhs do; plus the fact that Sikhs don't cut any body hair making them (at least the men, the article didn't discuss women) easily recognizable because of their long beards.
A Sikh man was shot dead in his store in the metro Phoenix, Arizona last Saturday. Police call it a hate crime. The shooter didn't rob the store. Another man here in LA, a Christian Coptic from Egypt was shot dead on Sunday in his store. He'd been there for over 20 years, much beloved by the local community. He and his family had fled persecution in Egypt because they were Coptic, a dwindling religion in Egypt, by moving to America.
Now for something more inspiring. I have a little booklet on Guru Nanak that was published by the Sri Ramakrishna center in India.
"God is one, but He has innumerable forms. He is the Creator of all and He Himself takes the human form."
"Meditate on the form of the Master, take his word as gospel truth. Let the footfalls of the Master resound in the recesses of your heart. The Master is the Infinite, bow unto Him."
"God is not pleased by obstinate penance nor by many religious garbs. He who fashioned the vessels of the body and poured into His ambroisal gifts will only be satisfied with man's love and service."
"If a man could extend his life to four ages (yugas), no, make it ten times longer, if he were known throughout the planes of creation and everyone therein followed him in respect, if every creature praised him to the skies, all this and more has no value, if God's eye looks not kindly upon him."
"Life grows shorter every day. Earn here the profit of God's name; and in the next world you shall abide in happiness, and find an eternal home and return no more to this world."
