Subject: Direct experience

Must one's teacher be "enlightened", one who "knows God" by direct experience?

J. Donald Walters:

Attorney Flynn: What do you mean by God?

Mr. Walters: Again, I think probably you need to experience such things.

Attorney Flynn: Okay. Now, have you experienced God?

Mr. Walters: I beg your pardon?

Attorney Flynn: Have you experienced God?

Mr. Walters: Am I enlightened? No.

Attorney Flynn: What is enlightenment?

Mr. Walters: Knowing your relationship with God by direct experience.

Deposition of J. Donald Walters, Day 1, Tape 1.

J. Donald Walters:

"...don't worry about who is a poorna avatar*, or who is even an avatar. Many saints who are far less than avatars are perfectly competent to take you to God"

Letter from Walters titled "On Avatars", September 25, 1999.

Paramhansa Yogananda:

"The blind cannot lead the blind; Only a Master, one who knows God, may rightly teach others about Him. To regain one's divinity one must have such a master or guru. He who faithfully follows a true guru becomes like him, for the guru helps to elevate the disciple to his own level of realization."

SRF magazine, Special Centennial Issue, Winter, 1993, pg. 3.

"So also to understand spiritual truths it is necessary to have a spiritual teacher, or guru, one who knows God. Even if you cannot be in his physical presence, or even if he is no longer incarnate on earth, you must follow the teaching of such a teacher if you would find God. Just any teacher will not do."

Paramahansa Yogananda, "The Divine Romance," pg. 406.

"He alone who is God realized, and who has been commanded by God to redeem souls, is a guru."

SRF magazine, Special Centennial Issue, Winter, 1993, pg. 3.

A leader who has no realization cannot show you the kingdom of God, no matter how large his following."

SRF magazine, Winter, 1993, pg. 4

"No matter how delusion tries to pull you away, the master who has experienced God knows your trouble and will help you to steady yourself on the path again. That is what the guru does for you if you are in tune with him. Even though you and the guru may be thousands of miles apart, his help will reach out to you."

Paramahansa Yogananda, quoted in Self-Realization Magazine, Spring, 1990, pg. 3.

"There are many who are trying to lead others, but who have no right to lead. The blind cannot lead the blind. No one can take you to God unless he himself has found God."

Paramahansa Yogananda, quoted in Self-Realization Magazine, Spring, 1990, pg. 3.

" In India we emphasize very strongly that God can be received only through the proper spiritual representative. In the West the emphasis is on filling the church, without much concern as to the inner spiritual qualifications of the preacher."

Paramahansa Yogananda, Thursday evening service, SRF Headquarters, December 21, 1939, quoted in SRF magazine, Summer, 1976.

A guru is a God-knowing person who has been divinely appointed by Him to take a seeker as a disciple and lead him from the darkness of ignorance and to the light of wisdom. Through the guru's pure perception, God teaches the devotee."

Paramahansa Yogananda, "The Divine Romance," pg. 405.

"It is always best to proceed under the protecting guidance of a Self-realized guru, for to find God one must have a guru."

Paramahansa Yogananda, quoted in Self-Realization Magazine, Summer, 1985, pg. 3

"...only a deep and thorough study of truth, as found in the scriptures of East and West, under the guidance of an enlightened teacher, can lead the spiritually blind from darkness to light."

"Follow the teachings of a true guru and you will be free."

SRF Praecepta Lessons, 1938 copyright, K-9, pg. 5.

"Guru is He who has experienced Truth. He serves as a guide in the dark forest of life. If you follow him, he will lead you out of the darkness."

"The Divine Romance", pg. 81.

"To the world God speaks only through His enlightened devotees. Therefore, the wisest of all actions is to tune in with the will of the guru who is sent to you by the Lord as a response to your souls's desire."

SRF magazine, Special Centennial Issue, Winter, 1993, pg. 6.

If a teacher is without egotism, you may know that God alone resides in his body temple; and when you tune in with him you are in tune with God. Jesus reminded His disciples: "Whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but Him that sent me."

SRF magazine, Special Centennial Issue, Winter, 1993, pg. 3.

"God does not talk openly to novitiate spiritual seekers; their intuition is not yet developed, and so inner guidance is not infallible. God therefore guides through the instructions of a guru who communes with Him. The preceptor must have divine attunement or we have "the blind leading the blind."

Paramahansa Yogananda, in the chapter entitled "The Need for Universal Religious Principles" in the book "Journey to Self-Realization", published by Self-Realization Fellowship.

"The difference between ascended masters and manifested masters should be understood in order that we may avoid being exploited by self-appointed and self-styled teachers." He also stated: "If anyone claims to have ascended in a very short period of time, ask them to cut off any part of their body and then re-create it at will. If they cannot do so, their claim is false".

Paramahansa Yogananda, Praecepta Lessons

Ananda's teaching:

"Sure Yogananda's the guru, but he's sent us to Swamiji, so we have to have faith in that, and be loyal."

Ananda minister and Light (beer) bearer Anandi Cornell, head of "monastic training" at Ananda, at a public Sunday Service in April of 1983.

*Poorna Avatar: An Avatar who fully manifests the Divine Consciousness. Such a one has the qualities of Omnipresence, Omnipotence, and Omniscience needed to take on the task of guiding and protecting millions of disciples over thousands of years to complete spiritual liberation. These are the true 'Gurus' appointed by God.
