I don't think of reason as an end at all, nor do I know anyone that does. Frankly, I don't understand where you got that idea.

Like all of you, I see life’s project as essentially spiritual. I am also a materialist, and I see no contradiction. Spiritual development must surely be aimed, at least in part, at cultivating a sense of communion with the world as it “really” is. If so, we must engage the world rationally, even as we live in the world spiritually.
