In Kriyananda's book The Path he tells essentially the same story about the poor Mr. Haupt. I don't know if the above described meeting with P.Y. was his only one before his leaving the ashram. It seems from Mr. Paulson's description that he was a natural karma-yogi who thought in terms of work equals pay-off, "gold coins."
Yogananda, again in Kriyananda's book, tells Mr. Paulsen that just to be attracted to this path one needed "very, very, VERY good karma." It only adds to the sadness of Mr. Haupt's inability to seize the opportunity for what it is essentially, monastic or householder, a process of incrementalism. Leading as PY said to the understanding that Love alone is Real and Eternal.
Maybe Mr. Haupt continued his meditations as a "civilian" and became realized. Wouldn't that've been great!!
