Sir Thomas More was one of the great men of European culture. He was Lord Chancellor of England in the early 16th century, but sentenced to death by King Henry VIII. as he refused to acknowledge the supremacy of Henry as head of the latter one's home made Anglican State Church.

More was quite a smart fellow and wrote a famous book, Utopia, in which he effectively put forth his progressive ideas on well-balanced social and philosophical conditions his time was lacking.

William Roper was More's son-in-law who later published a biography of his famous father-in-law. In what context this character appears in the play I don't know.

"A Man for all Seasons" is a play based on More's life. This has also been put on the silver screen as a major film by Fred Zinnemann, I believe that was in the 1960's.
