- Hi, Jan - Any recommendations on what are the best resources for geneology on the web? -- Janet, 01:35:49 12/24/02 Tue (12-235-87-204.client.attbi.com/12.235.87.204)
Hi, Jan - I've been going through some boxes of stuff from my grandparents and came across my grandfather's diaries from 1914-1918 which he kept while attending college in Massachusetts. I sent his diaries to the college archives and have been digging up photos and scrapbooks and all kinds of cool stuff. I ran across some possible relatives that I didn't know I had in Washington and Oregon. I don't know if any of my existing relatives in Massachusetts have kept in touch with them. I have written a couple notes to my Massachusetts relatives, but maybe I could find them somewhere on the web. Do you have a recommendation as to where to start? I clicked on some of your links and noticed that you have to register for some, so which did you find useful in spite of having to register?
Which geneology software have you found best to your liking?
Also I found some papers from the 1950's when my grandfather had some estate/inheritance dealings with a lawyer named Charles F. Reiche at 200 North Spring Street, Los Angeles. Any relation to your Reiche's?
Hope to see you, Sarah, and Dave sometime next week.

I am researching ELZABETH BOURCHIER who appears about 1500 in your listing of ancestors. A couple of small additions for you for the sake of accuracy.
ELIZABETH was born about 1500 in Braunton, Devon, now a small thriving township just north of Barnstaple.
Her husband, EDWARD, was not born in Braunton but in Raleigh, an area of Barnstaple that now contains the North Devon District Hospital and where, during excavations prior to the hospital being built, remains of a post-medieval jousting field were found.
Incidentally, I play guitar in a bluegrass band here in the UK. We seem to have a new name at each gig - we've been The Dullards; Break Wind and Fire; and, at the moment, Only Good for Glue (we're all over 50 years of age).
Best Transatlantic wishes.

Jan, this is a great site! I am looking for information related to the following:
Between 1853/1855 Pierre Bourelle, his wife and at least some of his children moved to the United States and “settled at St. George (a tiny French Canadian settlement, complete with church, a few miles northeast of Kankakee)”. (From his son, Celestin Bourelle’s, obituary.) It is believed that Pierre (Peter) died 1875 in Kankakee Co, Illinois In 1880 Anna (his wife) was living with her son, Celestin and his family in Earl Park, Indiana. She died in Earl Park, Benton County, Indiana, either in 1883 or 1888 (conflicting records).
Celestin was “born at St. Pierre, Canada, April 1, 1840, and lived there until about 1853/1855 when he came to the United States with his parents. In 1863, Celestin Bourelle and Celina Ponton were married, probably in Kankakee Co., Illinois. They had 13 children, 10 of whom were living as of the 1900 Census. Shortly after their marriage, Celestin and Celina moved to Benton Co., Indiana with their family, where they resided for 26 years. After that they moved back to Kankakee, Illinois. According to Census materials and his death certificate, Celestin was a farmer by trade.

Jan you have a GREAT site here. I just punched in my last name into google (just for kicks) and found your site. I am from the Kankakee area as are my parents. My dad's name is Bernard Henry Longtin Jr. His parents were Bernard and Roberta (unsure of her maiden name) The only name i recognized in the photos were Al Longin. I dont even know if its the same Al that I knew. He had several kids and the only ones that come to mind are Andy Longtin and Jim Longtin. I am pretty sure there were more kids. anyway, i just thought I would tell you that I loved your site and that I may be a distant relative. Have a nice day. Eric

when i was there the man who was taking care of the grounds seemed to be very knowledgeable as to the people buried there. Also did you happen to get in touch with St. Marys Church as to the whereabouts of the relatives buried in that little area of the Catholic cemetery where a lot of the manes you were looking for were buried?

I have been back to the park a few times over the years with kids and grandkids and I also enjoy Billy Hill's show. Always good clean fun and amazing music. Jan - I stumbled across your site researching my paternal grandmothers birth records. She was born and baptized in St. George, IL in 1892. Her last name was Surprenant - her parents Moise (Mose) and Rosanna Surprenant. I was wondering if you have ever come across any reference to that family? I know two of her siblings - Hector and Stella, but there were more. I think the majority of her family moved to Minnesota at some point (which is where I live). I was looking at some of your family pictures and there is some resemblance to some of my relatives - especially your great grandfather.
I would be curious to see if our family trees intersect somewhere. I am getting my doctorate in Family Studies and one of my projects is to put together a family history - any information would help!!
Thanks -
Kris Anderson
PS - At least one of your prayer cards is a familiar name - My grandma and Eva Lambert were very close. In fact, my dad was one of the casket bearers.

Billy Hill Problems... -- Scott, 07:57:07 07/26/02 Fri (NoHost/63.149.210.254)
Hi there, Jan. I'm posting this on your messageboard, as your yahoo account is bouncing back messages.
You might not remember me, but a while back I asked for some
photos of Billy Hill and the Hillbillies, as well as help with a script of their show.
Well, the photos and script were wonderful... thank you. But recently, I had a major crash of my computer that wiped out my entire inbox and files saved on my desktop.
And that, unfortunately, wiped out my Billy Hill script (the photos are fine though.. safe and sound!)...
You wouldn't happen to have that saved on your computer, would you??

Dear Jan:
Re. Louis Guimond of Quebec, deathdate and locale unknown. I suggest you search in Quebec for more information because in 1658, a chapel was in construction to honor Ste. Anne at Petit Cap in Beaupre, Quebec. At this time, a Louis Guimond a victim of what was probably rheumatoid arthritis, and to honor Ste. Anne, brought three small stones for the foundation. He was instantly and permanently cured of his arthritis. His was the first recorded miracle at St. Anne de Beaupre.
I have no further information on this Louis Guimond but it is very possible he never left this area of Beaupre, Quebec. Whewther contacting the Basilica of Ste Anne de Beaupre regarding this famous cure and person would help, I don't know but I think it might be worth your while. Next year is the 350th anniversary of the foundation of Ste. Anne de Beaupre (town and basilica both) and I think contact with the Basilica would be mutually beneficial.
Yours,
Michael Austin

Last year, I did extensive research on my family's background. My friend and I were surfing the internet and happened to fall upon this website. Seeing the picture of Julian Longtin and Mary getting married and I thought "wait a sec, I'm related to them!" Sure enough, my aunt has that exact picture in her basement; we found it last Thanksgiving while I was doing my research. For the most part, I didn't recognize anybody but that. Just thought that it was cool that somewhere in this World is a relative I don't even know! God Bless!

Dear Jan,
I was so impressed with your Mickey Collection, I just had to email to tell you about mine. I have one of the largest Disneyland Train collections in the world.
1.) The Schuco Disneyland Alweg Monorail. I have THE largest of it's kind in the world. Nine "G" sets, and 3 "S" sets. thes are the four car train with over 200 pieces.
2.) The Tyco Disneyland & Sante Fe RR. From 1964/65, the ES.Marsh HO scales with the freight cars from the early days.
3.) The COMPLETE Sear Magic Kingdom Collection as shown in your photo, with all the figurines, 12 in total with the Xmas tree.
4.) The MARX Disneyland Playset Circa 1961, the most sought after of all Disneyland Playsets with 95 pieces on a 60X22 inch playmat. I ahve both the brother and the sister sets #5995 and #4368. One was made exclusively for Sears and the other for wide distribution. Both are exactly the same except for the box.
5. ) The Lionel Mickey Circus Train with the complete cardboard cutouts of the Tent(18X14 inches) plus the Barker and the Sunoco station with mickey in his flat bed truck. This is all in working order. All wind up, with the front headlight and the ringing bell.
6.) The complete Town Square collection in "G" scale with all the figures and the music box in front of the pictured castle.
7.) The centre of my collection is the Made In France Mickey Mouse Bank. This is my most prized piece, since it is iron cast and very heavy. It is in excellent condition with all paint and no rust. Extremely rare.
8.) I also have the complete collection of all the original train postcards from the Nickel Tour collector book, which took me 12 years to collect.
9.) I also have a reproduction of the Circus Train from Pride Lines and the Marx Meteor Train re-issued from Marx in both electric format.
Many Thanks,
Ian Shapiro

I just had to write and tell you that you gave me a good chuckle! I'm celebrating Mickey's 75th birthday today and got wondering when Walt's birthday was. I remembered it being in December, and so did an internet search for "Walt Disney born December," knowing I'd get the date pretty easily. Your genealogy page was at the top of the list! Not only did I get my question answered, I also had a good laugh as well. You've made me want to find a similar link between Walt and myself. Do you have any tips? ;)
My grandfather has done a lot of genealogy and the most "celebrity" we've come across is that I'm a direct descendant of Benjamin Franklin. (Not the Benjamin Franklin, but a Benjamin Franklin who lived about the same time as the Benjamin Franklin.)
Anyway, I just thought you might like to know you made someone smile today. What a fun webpage. I like the mouseketeer caricature, too! lol... I just noticed the 1313 in your email address! Clever!! O.K. I've chuckled again! Hope you've enjoyed Mickey's Birthday!!

Wow, great website! The History of the Golden Horseshoe are some of the best Disney history pages I've ever seen. You should work for Disney. Very all thought out, complete and easy to read.
I also enjoyed your Billy Hill pages. When did they go to this three team schedule? The Genealogy of the Billy Hill family is one of the funniest pieces I've read in a long time. Very much in the satirical sytle of Groucho Marx. He would have loved it. You should be a writer.
Thank you for an enjoyable evening, it was better than what's on TV.

There's a very good book entitled 'The Genealogist's Internet' by Peter Christian, a fellow of the Society of Genealogists in London. I strongly recommend it, and its associated website, which is bristling with useful links ... have a look at http://www.spub.co.uk/protgi/index.html

Hey, Jan! We are a Christian, homeschooling family, too! When my first child was born, I was living in OC! Hubby and I went to Disneyland for our honeymoon! I was listening to The Dr. Demento show (as was my habit) when he introduced Weird Al and played his very first recording! We are HUGE Al fans, right down to the three year old who knows most of the words to the Poodle Hat songs! I'm seriously considering writing a Weird Al unit study for homeschoolers because I think there is no way to teach quite as effectively as humor!
Love your site, and in the words of the man who could be your next governor, "I'll be back." :D

Hi Jan - Thanks for the great history of the GHSR. Just one correction. The time line for the post cards showing "circa mid 1970s" (correctly noted as the same card, different printings) is not correct. The cards may have been sold through the 70's but the picture is of the GHR from the early to mid 60's. That's my dad, Dick Fenno playing the drums in the pictures. He passed away in 1967 at age 40. When the picture was taken I was about 6 years old. I distinctly remember attending the show many times during the summers of 1963, '64 and '65 when we were living in Santa Ana, Ca., just around the corner from the Magic Kingdom. Hate to be a nit picker but could not resist letting you know. Nice job with the site!

Enjoyed the Royal line a great deal and see that I can use some of this probably to chase my own back from Isaac Sheldon. We go back to his brother John who had a daughter, Sarah, who married a Stephen Potter.
Anyway, I know that there is some let's say discussion regarding Nicholas Vincent or Thomas Nicholas Vincent husband of Frittisweed Carpenter. What documentation do you have regarding her husband?
Thanks,
Jinny

I notice that you're researching the Laymon family of Schoharie County. My gggg-grandparents Benjamin Laymon and Jerusha Peters came from there. He appears to have been the son of John Lehman. Any connection?

Jan,
Found your site while doing a search about the Hillbillies. We just returned from there on vacation from Arkansas and enjoyed the show a lot. Was glad to see that others feel the same way. We hope to go back to Disneyland in a few years. Will the Billies still be there? Does the fiddle player have any CDs out besides the Billy CD, that we bought? Are any of them really brothers?
Thanks!
