The Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs wishes to extend its best wishes and that of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, to the Miss Trinidad and Tobago World delegate Gabrielle Walcott in this year’s Miss World Competition, the finals of which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 13, 2008.
The Ministry and, by extension, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, is conscious of the tremendous opportunities afforded by both the Miss World and the Miss Universe pageants for the development of the delegates themselves as possible role models for our young women, as well as the promotion of our twin island Republic. In furtherance of this, the Government has, over the years, provided the financial support necessary to assist in enabling our delegates to not only prepare themselves, but to compete and produce results of which the country has been understandably proud.
In more recent times, the Ministry has provided financial support to the Trinidad and Tobago delegates at the two competitions as follows:
Year Sum
2006 $300,000
2007 $325,000
2008 $300,000
This year, following representation made by the Franchise Holder, the Government has provided additional assistance in the sum of $284,000 from the Sport and Culture Fund, Office of the Prime Minister, for the Trinidad and Tobago delegates at both the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants, bringing the cumulative financial support in 2008 to $584,000, or approximately 72% of the delegates’ budgeted expenses.
These funds were provided, notwithstanding other successful approaches which the local franchise holders made to other State and Para-state agencies.
The Ministry takes this opportunity, on behalf of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, to applaud the efforts of Peter Elias and Associates, the franchise holders of both competitions, for their tremendous efforts over the years in the preparation of our delegates for the competitions. The Ministry also encourages the private sector and the national community in general, to partner with the franchise holders in respect of future competitions.
