Cheers as Miss TT returns home
Tuesday, December 16 2008

GABRIELLE WALCOTT, second runner-up in the Miss World Pageant, got a rousing VIP welcome at Piarco International Airport when she returned home from South Africa last night.

Gabrielle was originally scheduled to return home tomorrow night but decided to return home earlier because she is anxious to be with her father, Derek Walcott, one of her most ardent supporters. In fact, she quoted her father in answer to a question during the final round if the competition on Saturday.

Her father, a Roman Catholic deacon, was among those eagerly awaiting the chance to greet the world-class beauty as she stepped off her flight. Gabrielle mother and grandmother, who were with her in South Africa, are due to arrive home via New York later today. Her chaperone, Allyson Brown, who stopped off in London, arrives tomorrow evening.

Last night Gabrielle was wined and dined during a reception at the airport’s VIP Lounge hosted by the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs. The Minister, Marlene McDonald, Parliamentary Secretary Junia Regrello and other government officials were part of the delegation on hand to welcome her home.

Also on hand was Peter Elias, franchaise holder for the pageant.

“It is a fantastic feeling to be part of something like this that brings national pride,” he remarked just before Gabrielle’s flight touched down at Piarco.

I am pretty much resigned to the fact that we will not be attending MU09. It will be interesting to see what the government comes up with in January-as pgwizz said I don't think they care. As Peter said, Gabrielle is probably our last MT&T at either MU or MW for a very long time to come. This government is hopeless. They are doing nothing to make a dent in crime, the police need policing themselves and they don't care about promoting brand Trinidad and Tobago internationally, only dining foreign dignitaries on public money so they can get personal praise from these visitors to prop up their all mighty egos.

This is the worst government in the history of T&T in my opinion. What a mess they are.
