Just an observation I have made watching the Miss Trinidad and Tobago pageant. I dont seem to see the racial diversity with the contestants. How come in a country where over 43 percent of the population is of Indian decent. There were only one Indian girl in the entire competition. This has been the pattern for some time now. There was at the least seven girls of African decent two mixed race girls and one caucasian girl. I hope it is a matter of the girls being chosen are the best who came out. But, I find it hard to believe. Because most of the girls this year are no where close to beauty queen material. I know that there are many beautiful Indian and mix race girls in Trinidad and Tobago. How come we dont see more of them in Miss Trinidad and Tobago. Valene Maharaj was the last Miss Trinidad and Tobago of Indian decent and even in her year, I think she and one other girl was the only two Indian girls in the competition. I know alot of Indian girls are interested in representing their country. I hope alot more of them get chosen to be in Miss Trinidad and Tobago next year.

Alot of them are very educated and beautiful. I know they will do extremely well. I hope it is not a matter of favoritism when it comes to chosing girls. But, a matter of the best of the best gets picked. No matter what race they may belong to.

[> Subject: I think you answered your own question in the end. From my understanding, pageants are not prioritized among the general Indo-Trinidadian population. Just the other day I was having a discussion with my mom about where the Indians are making a mark for themselves in Trinidad...there seems to be a trend, moreso now than before, that people who are focussed on education and professional formation do not delve into pageantry. There seems to be a negative correlation or inverse relationship. Yes, pageants are deemed frivolous. Indo-Trinidadians are also still very conservative, while many are quite modern and wear current fashions, there is still the pressure from their community to wear conservative clothes. One Indian from India noted that many of the 21st century Indians in Trinidad still hold on to 19th century Indian values...not a bad thing. And finally, while I prefer to ignore it, there is the historical animosity between Afros and Indos.

I think the fact that there is a lack of an Indian presence is a symptom of a deeper socio-cultural phenomenon. Indians generally keep away from Afro-centric events, again, it is rooted in history. But having studied history, I can say that the world over, the Indian diaspora is more concerned with making their mark in all things academic
