The movie, We Were Soldiers was taken from the book, authored by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore who was a Lt. Col. in command of 450 men lst Bat., 7th Cavalry, who found themselves surrounded by 2,000 NVA Regulars in the Ia Drang Valley, Nov. 1965. It is considered a turning point in the war. Three days later, 2 and 1/2 miles away, a sister batallion was chopped to pieces. The actions at landing zones X-ray and Albany constitute one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. By 65, President Johnson had sent 200,000 troops and the plan seemed to be working, until Ia Drang.

The TLC did a segment on this battle hosted by the late ABC correspondant, Jack Smith who served in the Army from 1964 to 67 and saw action at Ia Drang. I can only assume that the press did show up, maybe not as portrayed, but Gen. Moore was a hands-on consultant during filming, and made a "standing ovation" appearance at West Point after the filming.

During my time, I saw everything from Majors to Generals show up on the battlefield, but only after the smoke had cleared generally. I saw two press types from Australia in Quang Ngai City, one beautiful female photographer and writer in early 67. There was a Lt. Col. who decided to run a medevac in Quang Ngai (Op De Soto) and seriously wounded as a pilot. Overall, no American press among our ranks, but also once saw a General SW of Da Nang at a CAC unit that had been overrun and Marines killed. He carried a swagger stick in his hand.
