Howdy Renee;

In a nutshell, the 7th Cavalry Regiment was just a part of the 1st Cavalry Division. See http://www.gruntonline.com/Order%20of%20Battle/US%20Army/us_army_oob5.htm for the complete order-of-battle of the 1st Cav. Div. (Vietnam Era). Intially and during the time period of interest here, all three battalions (the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th) of the 7th Cav. Rgt. were in the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Cav. Div. Have I confused you yet? A regiment is a name-only-thing these days. The reason being that a regiment is not a self-sustaining unit. You can't take 2,700 infantrymen and dump them out in the boonies some place. They need support which is why the basic building block of the Army and Marine Corps today is the brigade which includes the equivalent of an infantry regiment (although not all battalions need be from the same regiment) plus artillery, aviation, engineers, transportation, supply, medical, signal, etc. units. A brigade will number about 6,000 men and women, but less than half will be combat soldiers.

The designation "Airmobile" simply meant that the 1st Cav. Div. had its own helicopter aviation units assigned to it. Most other divisions in Vietnam used helicopter units from the 1st Aviation Bde. which were "attached" but not assigned to them. The 1st Brigade of the 1st Cav. Div. was airborne qualified (i.e. parachute infantry) for the latter half of 1966, but they lost that status due to replacements who hadn't gone to jump school. As I suspected, the division headquarters of the 1st Cav. Div. was at An Khe in northern II Corps from its arrival in Vietnam until mid-1969.
