Howdy Kathleen;

You sure did your homework well! The only things that I can add are that SP5 Thomas Anthony Pardo's Army serial number is RA 123406424 (which means that he enlisted) and his MOS was 12B30 (combat engineer). He was born on 8/23/48, his hometown of record is Flushing, NY, his religious preference was Roman Catholic, and he was single. His tour of duty in Vietnam began on 1/3/69 and he was KIA on 7/18/70 in Phuoc Long Province due to "Hostile, Ground Casualty, Gun, Small Arms Fire".

Notice that SP5 Pardo was in Vietnam for over 18 months. That is rare; he must have volunteered to extend his tour beyond the usual one year. The nickname of the 8th Eng. Bn. is "The Trojan Horse" and their motto is "Multum In Parvo" (Much In Little). The only homepage for the 8th Eng. Bn. that I can find (other than histories) is at http://unitpages.military.com/unitpages/unit.do?id=104057 , but I see that you have already left a message there as well as on the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall page at http://thewall-usa.com/ . There is a tribute to SP5 Parvo posted on the Virtual Wall Memorial website at http://www.virtualwall.org/dp/PardoTA01a.htm by a Ms. Phyllis Plonsker Leser who seems to have known SP5 Pardo well enough to have written letters back-and-forth while he was in Vietnam. I can find no tributes left by buddies however.

Phuoc Long Province is in the northwestern part of III Corps (see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/vietnam/maps/nc48-04/nc48_04b.html ). To the east is mountains and to the west is the Cambodian border; in between is a valley with roads. If SP5 Pardo was KIA in connection with a convoy operation, it was probably near a road leading to one of the two U.S. military bases at Song Be. To be certain, you would have to make a FOIA request for a copy of the Morning Report for C Co., 8th Eng. Bn., which records the loss from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The Morning Report should include the military map coordinates of where the incident took place and which can be plotted on the above map to within a 100 m. radius.

Since you are SP5 Pardo's sister, you qualify as next-of-kin of a deceased veteran and as such have the right and privilage to request copies of your brother's military records (DD-214 and Army personnel file) and a set of replacement medals (if necessary) from NARA. See http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html for particulars.
