Howdy Karl;

SP4 Dominic J. Preira, Jr.'s Army serial number is RA 11422215 (which means that he enlisted) and his MOS was 11B10 (Indirect Fire Infantryman, i.e., mortar crewman). He was born on 5/5/46 and his hometown of record is Burlington, CT. His tour of duty in Vietnam started on 12/26/65 and he was assigned to A Co., 1st Bn., 5th Cav. Rgt., 1st Cav. Div. He was KIA on 2/18/66 either in or near the Kim Son Valley (which is in either southeastern Quang Ngai Province or northeastern Binh Dinh Province) due to "Hostile, died while missing, Ground Casualty, Gun, Small Arms Fire." His body was recovered. SP4 Preira was single and his religious preference was Roman Catholic.

There is a tribute to SP4 Preira posted on the Virtual Wall Memorial website at http://www.virtualwall.org/dp/PreiraDJ01a.htm a portion of which says:

"My name is Ralph C. Mitchell and I was a medic during Operation Masher/White Wing. On 18 Feb 1966 Sgt Collins was laying beside me when he took a hit from a 50 cal [machine gun] in the head. Sgt Terlecki took a hit from the same 50 and fell at my feet behind me, his last word was "Doc". I had been hit in back of my right shoulder. Preira got hit the first time and fell, he got up calling for Sgt Allison and got hit the second time, he tried to get up and the Cong finished him off. Riggs was killed by M79 fire.

I wish I could get in contact with their folks and tell them what a great job these fellows tried to do for their country.

You could also try leaving a message in the guestbook at http://www.ranger25.com/ . I could not find any remembrances posted by relatives.
