I was a military writer and photographer for the 101st (1970-1971). Of the 4 of us in our office at 2nd Brigade Hq in Phu Bai, we would each spend 3 weeks in the field during a month and one week in the rear. We each had our infantry, arty, ara battalions we liked to hang with and write about. I spent most of my time with the 2/501st around FB Brick, and Rifle and sometimes on and around Tomahawk. Most of the news we reported was censored by brigade hq at Camp Eagle. All of the hard news was reviewed for content and some of the human interest stories were. As for civilian reporters, all were suppose to be chaparoned by someone from the PIO office so they wouldn't be anywhere they weren't suppose to be. I for one, when I went as a chaparone, would pretty much let them do what they wanted. That way I would have some benefits from them in return. But they were there occasionally. It's was never like it is now with reporters imbedded in the unit in Iraq or Afgan.
