Howdy Cindy;

Your unit designation is confusing. I think that you mean Headquarters and Headquarters Batttery, 2nd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Regiment, 23rd Artillery Group, Second Field Force Vietnam Artillery. However, you could mean Headquarters and Headquarters Battery (or Company?), 23rd Artillery Group, Second Field Force Vietnam Artillery, but then, why mention the 2nd/13th Arty? The U.S. Army order-of-battle in Vietnam says:

23rd Art Group II FFV Art.
HQ at Phu Loi until May 1971 when it moved to Long Binh.

HQ 23rd Art Gp Nov 1965 – Feb 1972
6th/27th Art (175 Gun/8" How SP) Nov 1965 – Oct 1971
2nd/32nd Art (175 Gun/8" How SP) Nov 1965 – Feb 1972
2nd/13th Art (105 How T) Nov 1965 – Mar 1970
5th/2nd Art (AW SP) Nov 1966 – Jun 1971
2nd/11th Art (155 How T) Dec 1966 – Jan 1972
1st/27th Art (155 How SP) Apr 1967 – Dec 1970
6th/15th Art (105 How T) Jun 1967 – Dec 1969
3rd/197th Art (155 How T) Sep 1968 – Sep 1969
2nd/12th Art (155 How T) Sep 1969 – Sep 1971

There is also some additional information on the 23rd Arty Grp at http://www.landscaper.net/23group.htm . The only homepage for the 2nd/13th Arty that I can find is on the Military.com website, but you have already left a message there and posted a query for an M. Schmidth. Does your grandfather's first name start with the letter "M"?

The last name of "Schmidth" is quite rare (there are a whole bunch of "Schmidt"'s though). That means that a nation-wide white-pages search is feasable. A few long-distance calls and you might get lucky and find your grandfather or perhaps a relative of his who knows where he is. A battalion mess-hall supervisor would have had some rank [senior NCO (E-6 or above)]. Good luck!
