Howdy Chris;

I have never seen the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., but I have seen the half-scale "Moving Wall" when it came to Santa Rosa, CA, in 1985. It is quite literally overwhelming to see all 58,234 names displayed all at once and all in the same place. As I approched "the Wall", I had to fight back my tears. It is impossible to read all of the names and find someone that you're looking for because the names are displayed in chronological order by KIA date not in alphabetical order by last name.

There were quite a few other people there, but nobody said anything. There was a mood of sacred reverence like being in a church. I approached close enough to start reading some names at random like "SGT Gary L. Lantz". I didn't know him, but I couldn't help wondering if he was Army, Air Force, or Marines. Did he have a wife? Children? I don't know.

Finally, I went over to a volunteer who had a big book which correlates names with panel and line numbers and gave him a list of three names: SP4 Edward Paul "Doc" Ogden, SP4 Michael Broderick "Bullwinkle" Wier, and SGT Scott Douglass Schoeben. Only then was I able to locate the names of my three buddies out of that sea of names. I felt sad that they had lost their lives at such a young age and a little bit guilty about still being alive. I gave them each a salute and then went home. It was a most sobering experience.
