This was considered the worst military disaster since Pearl Harbor. On 16 May 1965, 26 AF men were killed, hundreds wounded, and the loss of 75 planes. B-57's were on the strip with 500# bombs that were accidentally ignited when one of the black powder cartridges (used to start the planes) went awry. It resulted in a "cook-off" of bombs that lasted two days.
