Howdy Thomas;

I'm sorry too that your buddy, SP4 Charles Lamb, was KIA, but you are not to blame. Many of us on this board have lost buddies in Vietnam and there wasn't a damned thing that we could have done to prevent it. You were probably in shock which explains why you couldn't move and even if you could have moved, it doesn't sound to me like any amount of medical training could have saved SP4 Lamb's life.

Nevertheless, it is common (in spite of all rational arguments to the contrary) to feel quilt over the loss. Survival guilt is a symptom of PTSD. If you find it impossible to follow Wayne Gregory's somewhat blunt advice to "saddle up and move out, soldier" and get on with your life, then I would recommend that you go to a Veterans Center and get help. There is no need for you to destroy your life just because your buddy lost his.

Whatever you do, don't try to surpress these feelings for 22 years like I did. They will fester and grow and eventually come out anyway. Get help now before it's too late.
