I too remember the men cheering in the plane on return. They cheered as they saw the lights of San Francisco below on the way to Travis AFB. I didn't cheer and I wondered why others did. I knew, that it was not going to be the same. From Travis we were bussed to SF Int. Airport to find our way home. There were the "looks" the awful comments etc.You may think it was some radical war protestor making these remarks. Actually they were middle aged people old enough to be my parents. It was too late in the evening for radicals to be awake. Along the way home the remarks continued, had I not been a rational person I may have commited an assault that night and ended up in jail. There never was a man in a bar that said "welcome home". If even one person had said such a thing my life may have been different. I first heard the words "welcome home" on Prodigy in 1990 from another Vet, it brought tears to my eyes. However over twenty years without hearing something ,anything took its toll. I wish things had been different.
