Hi Wayne,

I don’t think you are “going against the flow”. Alcohol is a dangerous drug which ruins and destroys more lives every year than all other drugs put together. I know that some will question this because many of the “numbers” are glossed over or covered up. The alcoholic beverage industry spends many millions of dollars and has one of the strongest lobbies to influence data and legislation around the world. If the true numbers were known it would be shocking. The trouble is that most people don’t want to see the “true numbers” about almost everything.

In thinking back, I wonder how many friendly fire casualties were caused because alcohol was very available in most base camp areas. When it comes to heavy artillery either on the ground or in the air just a little mistake can have horrible results. We make enough mistakes just because we are human. Add something into the mix that impairs judgment and well..... .

Perhaps it was a good thing that we never got a cold beer out in the field or more of the warm ones that we got only a few times. All other drug use we stopped as soon as we spotted it. A few times some “FNG’s” managed to bring some marijuana along with them. That got dumped as soon as we spotted it along with a rather cold warning about what might happen if they tried to get some more. The only exception was “Doc”. He was addicted to Darvon and there wasn’t much we could do about it. Fortunately it didn’t seem to effect his job since he was always there for us and he was as good a marksman as anyone in the Platoon.
