Friendly fire/substance abuse is a non-issue in my experience. We were monitored 24/7 by our peers. I think the subject is one of those which gives the wrong impression about the Nam Experience. I think people forget about the many rules and regulations and the reality tour of the grunt. Straw hooches noted as clubs were basically in the rear, like Battalion area or further to the rear. R&R speaks for itself in different ports for rec. There was no mistake worse than an accidental discharge. Punishment and discipline most often came from within the ranks, your fellow Marines. The peer pressure of behavior and duty. Friendly fire was at a minimum and most often attributable to mistakes in logistics in the rear. Sending troops out at night in close proximety. Air support was miraculous in avoiding friendly fire incidents. Never Happen, alcohol and weapons on the lines.
