Wayne, I'm not implying that alcohol had anything to do with that support fire that almost took us out. But I've wondered for years what the heck the men on that gun could have been thinking. Yes it could have been a short round; a bad powder charge or out Lt. could have called in the wrong coordinates. If the latter had been the case then the plotters should have questioned if we really wanted fire support so close to our perimeter. Unless I'm mistaken that was part of their job since there could have been no question at all about where we were at. Perhaps the Marines didn't care because we were Army grunts and not the Marines which we had relieved. If that was the case then their "mistake" was worse than if they had been drunk on the job.

Just a note, we never as far as I remember ever called in for or recieved any 175mm fire support. Perhaps that was a good thing.
