Wayne's reply is a good one. Depended also on how far the unit was from artillery support. 105's handled most fire missions. When greater bang for the buck was needed, the 8-inch guns were called in. When the greatest distance was encountered, the 175's were called. However, the 175's had only HE rounds. No WP and no spotter rounds. I can't remember if we were capable of air bursts, but our fuses were variable, so we could send in rounds with a timed delay before they went off. Not quite bunker busters, mind you, but could uncover some earth nonetheless.

The FO had to be right on with the 175's, because HE was all that was available.
