Howdy Ed;

That is most interesting, but it's only to be expected that civilian aid workers will have the attitude that they are the most important people in the universe and are, therefore, justified in consumming ten times the resources as any individual that they are purportedly there to help. Besides, one must bear in mind that one is dealing with civilians and not with military personnel.

The important thing is to make sure that everybody in the effected region has food, potable water, temporary shelter, and medical treatment as soon as possible. The dead must be identified and buried or cremated immediately so as to avoid epidemics. God bless the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Marines for responding so quickly and making it all happen in spite of problems with the U.N., NGO's, the media, and local governments.

Many Americans have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the relief effort knowing full well that less than half of it will ever reach the tsunami survivors--the rest will be skimmed off by administrators and government officials. The main thing is that when people need help, the U.S. is there and not al Quida or its sympathizers.

During the war in Vietnam, if a civilian was wounded, guess who the Vietnamese came to for help? The VC? No!, The ARVN? No! The U.S. Army? Yes! That's the only PR we need--a recognition on the part of the people themselves that the U.S. is there to help, not to hinder.
