Howdy Larry;

You're right--we shouldn't expect to get anything out of helping the tsunami victims. After all, that isn't why Americans are trying their best to help in the first place, but rather because it is the right, moral, and humanitarian thing to do and the U.S. just happens to be in a position to do something about it. However, I don't think that it's unreasonable to expect that the people who are being helped will be less inclined to resent the U.S. Of course, that does not extend to their local governments who are embarrassed at their inability to respond rapidly enough to cope with the situation (except for India).

Naturally, if anything goes wrong, the U.S. will be the first one blamed for it. In fact, al Jazerra TV even broadcasted the claim that the U.S. was responsible for the tsunami disaster. Why? Because we didn't warn the local governments in time--that's why. And yet, I heard on the news that several seismic monitoring stations tried to warn the local governments of a possible tsunami, but all of the officials were "out to lunch" and it is doubtful if they would have been able to issue a warning to the coastal areas in time anyway. So much for third-world governments.

Actually, the phenomenon of the person being helped resenting and even hating the person giving them aid instead of being grateful is quite common. I'm no psychiatrist and don't understand why that occurs, but maybe there's someone else out there who can explain it.

Perhaps there will come a day when the U.S. will depend upon the help of other nations, but I don't forsee that happening for another two centuries or so at which time I will be long dead. I think that we can always depend on the United Kingdom, but I'm not so sure about anybody else.
