Remember the buddy system? A lot of guys I knew joined under the buddy system. I suppose it gives a guy a certain secure feeling to join with another guy and share the experience. Takes the edge out of fear of the unknown, and joining the Corps leaves any young man a little sweaty around the forehead. The problem is, you are quickly dispatched upon stepping off the bus, and the only time you can share anything is when you finally get liberty. No such thing as buddies in boot camp or training. You are a small fragment of the big machine and you better not foul up the engine. Comfort comes in knowing a hundred other guys are going thru the exact same thing.

I was never encouraged to join the Marines. In fact I was warned by Marines to not do it. You tell a young man not to, and the challenge has been issued. I often whine about being yanked from college, but my grades were wobly, my girlfriend wanted to get married, and I didn't have a clue of where my life was headed. I couldn't see myself bagging groceries. I could see myself in dress blues, fighting on beachheads and being a man. So it was written and off I went without a clue of what war was about. My father was Army Air Corps and he told me I better go where I can get a skill.

Many a time I layed in my bunk in bootcamp and wondered? But once I put that tropical uniform on, I have never been prouder of my branch of service. I always felt like a million in that uniform. I know Marines who griped and moaned back then, but today hang Semper Fi on everything they have. Life is a journey in progress, and I wouldn't change my decision to join if I could. For those who chose not to go, I think they missed out on something they wished they had done back then. To each their own.
