Jeff, on most of the points you answered I agree with you. The underlying question of course is the “if’s”. Our intelligence and general understanding about how the people living in that part of the world will react and do has had a rather dismal record so far. A lot I think depends on our not stirring the pot any more than we already have. Comments like those from Lt. General James Mattis about it being “fun” to kill some people doesn’t help what we are trying to accomplish. The same can be said for the perceived “veiled” threats to Iran that our Administration has engaged in recently. If Iran, Syria and even Saudi Arabia begins to feel that the “new” Iraq is a real threat to their stability then our efforts and the sacrifice of all the lives so far will come to nothing. We don’t have the capability to “control” that part of the world and I don’t see the people in our country being willing to take the steps to gain that ability. This is a time to “tread softly” and put that “big stick” where it is far less obvious. If we continue to be perceived as a big “bully” we lessen the chance for world support for a Democratic Iraq and our ability to rein in Israel will continue to erode.
