I just recieved an email from a person about my post who I guess decided not to post on the BB due to his prefered choice of language. His question (?) however was a response that I somewhat expected. In effect he said; if we pull out then "they" will win. Well, yes, if the situation continues to deteriorate and we make what I think would be a wise decision then you could say that "they" won. My response at this moment is a question and the root of the reason for my post. If the situation continues to get worse and the election does not have the stabilizing effect that is hoped for we could be faced with the good possibility that in the next several years we will have lost several thousand more American lives and who knows how many Iraqi will die and "they" still will win. We may soon be faced with a very hard choice. The forces opposing Democratic rule in Iraq may force the Iraqi's as a whole to "sort things out" as they have for hundreds of years. The group who is the strongest and most ruthless will dominate and make the rules. If the election works and there are enough "cool heads" in each of the factions vying for power it is hoped that they will see the benefit, in at least this cause, of joining forces and helping us in ending the insurrection. If they can't join forces in this then they will "sort it out" the old way reguardless of our military presence. If we try to stop them then the carnage will most likely be greater than if we left them alone and a fair number of Americans will die. Even if we pull back to our "safe" areas one group or several groups will try to get us actively involved by either attacking us or demanding our protection. If we pull out then we can always come back and offer to help the "winner" rebuild Iraq. I know what I am saying is at best simplistic due to the complexities of our current situation but it may be our best choice both for ourselves and the Iraqi's. Only time will tell how it will all work out.
