Hi Jim. I have never questioned the need to get rid of Saddam but don’t be blinded by political rhetoric. There were greater evils and greater dangers in this world than Saddam was when we invaded. American men and women put on the uniform to defend our country not to be used for revenge or the enrichment of others. North Korea and Iran were and still are much greater threats to our country than Iraq was. Saudi Arabia is the funding source for the terrorists of 9/11 and many other atrocities. Yet George W. chose to go after the weakest of the bad guys and the one who posed the least threat to our country. This was if nothing else a tactically stupid thing to do. If you believe that our occupation of Iraq is somehow keeping our country safe from attack then please tell me how, I seem to be missing something.

I am no dove by any means. True, I didn’t like killing other human beings but that was my job at the time. Our going into Afghanistan was more than justified and we might have actually gotten “all” the terrorists if men hadn’t been taken away to invade Iraq. We had Saddam caged, he wasn’t going anywhere and if either our intelligence was what it should have been or if it was then we could have stopped the weapons that our “friends” in Europe where selling to Iraq. If we knew about it then the inaction by our administration was criminal.

True, if we had gone after the enemies that actually threaten us the most we would have lost more lives and we might have failed. Takes a set of big ones to take a chance on failure, more than W. has I think. The sad part about all of this is that we may still have to take on Iran and North Korea and do something about the Saudis. We blew our one chance at a surprise pre-emptive attack on Iraq, the least threat to us of all. While all wars are a stupid waste at least we could have taken a “real” enemy out. All our current President wanted to do was “win” a war, something which he declared while we were still fighting in the streets of Baghdad. This idea of bringing “Freedom and Democracy” to Iraq was an after thought when he realized that after declaring our “win” he didn’t have a clue what to do next.

Not to sound defeatist but it looks like the Iraqi election is not going very well. Iraqis and Americans continue to die and our real enemies are rattling their sabers because they know we are in the process of exhausting our resources to fight them. Sure, we can still nuke them but expect to see a couple of American cities go up in a fireball if we do. We blew a chance to take out a real enemy and we are now in a worse position than we were before. If you think that this is a good thing and that I am wrong then I must have taken a more serious head wound in Vietnam than I thought or I need more meds so that I can see the rosy view of things that (some of) rest of you do.

Wayne, I tend to write too much, you beat me too it.
