Hi Beanie,

I agree very much that discussion of the Vietnam War and Era should be the primary topic on this BB. There is a point to be made, however, in showing how events of today are in different ways connected to the Vietnam experience. The Vietnam War did not exist in a vacuum somehow separate from the here and now. The experience and it’s lessons are carried in the hearts and minds of almost two million surviving Americans who served and the many millions more who had a direct effect (on us and the War) one way or another who stayed at home. A number of those who served and many more that stayed home are now involved in running our government and making national policy. What happens today is still very much effected by what happened over thirty years ago.

While the “War Stories” section helps students and others who want to learn more about what the Vietnam War was like from a personal perspective I see the BB as both a place for questions and further explanations about the War and a place to connect what is happening today to the past. Lessons learned without a context to put them into all to often end up as sterile trivia. Lessons that should have been learned were not and why they were not learned should be discussed. I’m disappointed that students are not taking part in these discussions. If they were we would, I believe, focus more on the connection between the present and the past and not get side-tracked as we frequently do. I like the current monitored set-up for the BB and perhaps an occasional question from a monitor as to how the present thread relates to the Vietnam experience would help keep those of us who are active on the board better focused.
