Howdy Larry;

That was very well written and I agree that the word "hero" is a subjective concept. Civilians and those who have served or who are currently serving in the military are bound to have widely divergent definitions of who constitutes a hero. The definition could be so narrow that it would only include posthumous recipients of the Medal of Honor or so broad that it would include everybody in uniform that conscienciously performs his or her duty regardless of what their job is.

It gets really touchy when we start considering degrees of heorism. Is the individual who dies in a helicopter crash due to a mechanical failure any less a hero than someone who dies in a hostile rocket attack while sleeping in a barracks? I mean, what do you tell their respective families in each case?

You and I both probably have a chestfull of "salad", but I'll bet my boots that niether one of us considers ourselves to be a hero and yet others sometimes do. I for one never did anything that I would consider "above and beyond" the call of duty so when I was awarded a medal, it came as a complete surprise and I thought it was just another Army SNAFU.

I'd be interested in what others have to say on this topic.
