Hi Jeff. I just got a email recently that one of the men from my platoon in Vietnam had suffered a heart attack. It looks like he will recover ok but everyone was worried for a few days. If it is his time to leave us I’m glad we had the chance this past summer to tell him how we feel about him in a very special way. I wrote this at the same time I typed the original post but held off posting both until I heard if he was going to make it or not.

At my Battalion’s reunion this past July a member of my old platoon, Hank Thomas, was awarded a Silver Star for his action in helping our Company Commander (then the Company XO) save the lives of the rest of my platoon. The paper work had been lost for over thirty-five years and he never knew that he had been nominated for the award. After the award ceremony when we all crowded around to congratulate him he couldn’t stop crying. Major General Murry Edmonds (Ret.) who presented him with the medal asked why he was crying. Hank said that it wasn’t because it had taken so long for him to get the medal but because his friends thought what he did was special and had worked for years (without him knowing) to find the lost paper work and get it processed through the DOD. He said he didn’t think he deserved it but we asked him to wear it for the rest of the evening because the award was as much for him as it was for the rest of us. Hank was a part of our “team” and that day along with Captain Sprayberry he did his job like he had so many times in the past but this time we had a chance to reward him for it, even if it took thirty-five years to do it right.
