Howdy James;

SGT Paul E. "Frenchy" LaTourette's Army serial number is US 51602488 (which means that he was drafted) and his MOS was 11B40 (Light Weapons Infantryman). Thanks to Bruce above he was a member of A Co., 3rd Bn., 7th Inf. Rgt., 199th Light Inf. ("Redcatcher") Bde. However, the 199th LIB was never part of the Americal Division which consisted of the 11th, 196th, and 198th LIBs and was located much further north in I Corps and northern II Corps.

There is a tribute on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to SGT LaTourette left by a Mr. Rodger Combs (redwincombs@aol.com) who served in the same platoon as your uncle, but he left Vietnam prior to 10/20/67. You could also try leaving a message in the guestbooks of http://www.redcatcher.org/ and http://redcatcher10alpha.com/ . Also see http://members.aol.com/thays46945/indext.html .

The 199th LIB operated primarily in III Corps to the north, west, and south of Long Binh (near Saigon) and was never assigned or attached to a division, but operated as an independent brigade (like the 173rd Airborne Bde. for example). Long An Province is located about 20 Km. to the southwest of Saigon and would be at the southern-most extent of the brigade's area of operations. Insofar as I'm aware, the only base camp in the area that was used by the 199th was Rach Kien. After mid-1968, Long An Province became the responsibilty of the 3rd Bde., 9th Inf. Div.

Since you undoubtedly qualify as next-of-kin, you may request a copy of your uncle's Army personnel file and replacement medals (if necessary) from the National Archives and Records Administration. Use Standard Form 180 (SF-180) for these requests. Copies of the form may be obtained from any VA facility, most veterans organizations, or from the NARA website.
