I have no problem with any serviceman drinking while on base. There are always MP's to keep him/her in line.

What I object to is anyone who takes a drink and then takes to the streets in his car.

We have a minimum age of 21 for drinking in my state and a zero tolerance for underage drinking. That is good. May discourage some. I know of too many families that have been devastated because their young men died in auto fatalities. Youth + drinking + cars = disaster.

I'd just as soon see the controls (age requirements) kept in place. Just because a young person volunteers to defend this great nation doesn't make him above the laws of the land. Those controls are not only for our good, but for his/her good also.

If a military person drinks to "self-medicate," then that problem should be addressed also. It is not a crime to be affected by PTSD. I know about the nightmares and the rage. But drinking is no solution. Seeking help for whatever ails you makes sense.

It has always been a crime to drive while impaired by alcohol (or anything else). Make no mistake, I respect our servicemen as much as anyone, I'm proud to have served my country in the sixties. But I don't want any serviceman or woman killing any innocent persons (possibly one of my own loved ones) because of alcohol/drugs either.

Semper fi,

Harry
