I have a camoflage story. When I first arrived in-country at the Marine 155 Gun artillery base at Red Beach (near DaNang) I saw that all the troops tents were green and all the hard-back hooches (offices, mostly) had galvanized tin roofs. The only building that was painted in camo colors (dark brown, tan, light and dark green, and black) was a bunker situated between our self-propelled guns. I quickly learned that it was the Ammo bunker. It contained heavy 155mm high-explosive rounds on one side and canisters of powder bags used to propel those rounds at the enemy. During a fire mission, some of those rounds would be standing upright and armed with fuses. I always steered clear of that bunker.

The funny part of this story was that Red Beach was a dug-out area with nothing but sand around it. Sand was everywhere. It got into my nostrils, into my seabag, into my rifles, and even into my food if I waited too long to eat it. That nasty, dusty tan sand also ate the tops off both pairs of my "practically new" well-polished leather boot-camp boots. That dirty, nasty and abrasive sand rounded off the corners of my boot soles and heels.

In case you missed it, can you imagine what Charlie was thinking? Here were all these non-descript tents and plywood-and-screen-sided hooches and there's just one big bunker painted in camo---a camo that didn't match the surroundings? He probably was laughing himself silly.

Semper fi,

Harry
