Daniel, while I'm not the one who wrote the story let me put it to you about as straight as I can about joining the service. I need to tell you first that my life experience up to now leaves me fairly cynical, embittered by how I have been treated for many years and angry at the people in my country for being self centered, ignorant, easily lead and unwilling to listen to some things they don’t want to hear. I expected more, I guess, from what had been for a while the greatest nation in the history of the world.

In a time of relative peace, meaning no one shooting at you in an organized way, join the Armed Services if you value the history, ideals and concepts that still give us the chance to be greater in all ways than we are now or have been in the past. Join if you feel that your life is less important than the safety of these things and the lives of the rest of the people in your country. Join if you are willing to stand in the way of any danger that threatens the things that are most important to our survival as nation. Join if you are willing to give up many personal freedoms so that others can enjoy theirs. Don’t join if you expect your fellow countrymen and women to appreciate what you gave up to protect them. Things might change and you might get lucky but don’t expect it. Don’t join if the only reason is to get money to go to school or learn a trade or skill that you can use in civilian life. It works that way for some people but I don’t see a lot of hands waving in the air.

In a time of war, especially a war like I was in and like the one we are fighting in Iraq, join only if you believe so strongly that we are threatened by the forces we are currently fighting, that our way of life and government is the only way for anyone to live and that you are willing to kill other human beings to make these things happen. Killing is what war is all about, never forget that. Join if you are willing to die for this belief or perhaps worse be physically crippled for life. The odds are in your favor that you won’t be but the chance is still very real. Join if you are not afraid that the wartime service experience will change how you look at yourself and the world forever because it will. This change may or may not be for the better. Anyone who tells you that it will be one way or the other is lying to you or doesn’t know what he or she is talking about. It could be the experience that allows you to do great things and become more than you ever thought you could be. It could also be the gateway to a living hell for the rest of your life. It’s a roll of the dice.

That’s my two cent’s worth and at the current price of gasoline that’s about all it’s worth. What ever you decide to do I wish you well.
