Howdy Tom;

SP4 Gregory Douglas Cornett's Army serial number is US 53758110 (which means that he was drafted) and his MOS was 11B20 (light weapons infantryman). He was born on 3/7/49. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 9/5/68 and he was assigned to "A" Co., 1st Bn., 506th Inf. Rgt., 101st Airborne Div. He was KIA on 5/18/69 in Thua Thien Province due to "Hostile, Ground Casualty, Multiple Framentation Wounds". His home town of record was Putney, KY, his religion was Methodist, and he was single.

Hamburger Hill (= Dong Ap Bia = Hill 937) is located just to the west of the A Shau Valley and about 3 Km. from the Laotian border. For a good map of the area see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/vietnam/maps/ne48-16/ne48_16g.html . The battle started on May 11th, 1969 and didn't end until the final assault on May 20th. The 3rd/187th took the brunt of the fighting and were gradually reinforced by the 1st/506th and 2nd/501st from the 3rd Bde. of the 101st Abn. Div. The 3rd Bn. of the 1st ARVN Div. also took part in the battle. There's tons of stuff posted online about Hamburger Hill, but try the 506th Infantry Regiment Association at http://www.506infantry.org for a start.
