The Vietnam War is referred to as a conflict, police action, but consequently was a War. It took place during the Cold War era, Democracy vs. Communism. Scary times of nuclear proliferation left countries wary of one another and basically enemies, Eastern Europe, Soviet Union and China being the major players against the US. The spread of Communism was a major concern for the US, especially in poor 3rd world countries. A head to head encounter was almost inevitable, and this took place in the Indo-China country known as Vietnam. It turned into a power of wills, freedom, free enterprise, and Westernization vs. the Socialist and Communist ideals in a nation divided. A long and bloody conflict raged on till Americas patience ran out. Vietnam was never a failure, it was a stoic attempt to free people and a better way of life.

The Vietnam War was complex, and a need to attend your nearest library. Start with WWII, and study Ho's guerilla actions against Japanese, his letter to Ike which was ignored. Americas support of the French during the French Indo China War, and make your way thru the bloody battles that took place in the 60's and early 70's and draw your own conclusions about the Vietnam War. Keep in mind, you will have to rely on a free press and a free nation to learn anything about the Vietnam War.
