Howdy Milly Sue;

I can't seem to find out much else except to say that the 497th TFS was stationed at Ubon Air Base (or Air Field), Thailand, and that their nickname was "Night Owls". An F-4D could have had a navigator as well as a pilot, but the only other KIA in the Air Force on 7/7/72 was MAJ Harland M. Davis, Jr. who died for the same reasons as 1LT Koss, but there is no information on his unit nor a tail number for his aircraft so I have no way of knowing if these two are related or separate incidents. You or your friend can make a Freedom of Information Act request for a copy of the accident report for F-4D 65-0800, but I don't know where to send it. It might have to go to the National Archives and Records Administration in St. Louis, MO. The date of 7/7/72 is somewhat late during the war since the last ground combat unit left Vietnam in Aug., 1972. I can find no homepage for 497th TFS; maybe some of the fly boys know something.
