Howdy D. Lester;

Unless the guys at http://www.1-5th-m-25th-inf-1966.com/ know where Wally Nelson is, you've got a problem on your hands. My battalion [2nd/47th (Mech)] has only been able to account for about a third of the guys who served in Vietnam and I would imagine that the situation is similar with the 1st/5th Inf. You can ask the officers of the 1st/5th Inf. to shotgun an e-mail to all members asking them to take a look at their old orders for promotions, awards & decorations to see if the name of "Wally" Nelson appears on any of them. If it does, then you can get his real first name, middle initial, and most importantly his Social Security Number. From an SSN and for a few bucks, you might be able to track him down that way, but check the SS Death Index first (it's free). Watch out! In addition to the 1st/5th Inf. (Mech), there is also a 1st/5th Cavalry and a 1st/5th Artillery which also served in Vietnam.
