Haven't seen the film production from Swofford's book, but Swofford hit the interview trail during the release of the movie. He took no exceptions to the movie version that I remember? In fact he confirmed the portrayal in several interviews. Maybe movie hype and the need for box office receipts? Many a movie have left us with less, about every branch and every circumstance, not just Jarheads. However if this is Swoffords memory and the way he saw it, so be it. Even if there were dissenting voices in his outfit, he is entitled to his perception of the experience. After reading exerpts from the book, it was eye catching when it first hit the shelves, I didn't care for the book. Perhaps that has more to do with the disenfranchising of the war experience between Nam and the more current conflicts?

The Jarhead experience in my memory is conflicting, and seldom do two jarheads remember it as was. In my era, it was about 18-21 yo men, who swore allegiance to God and Country from all walks of life. One thing you knew for sure, you were going to war in 5 and 1/2 months and doing combat duty. There were no questions about that and the training more focused. It's about gruntism and that's hard to explain unless you've done it. With that comes some wild and crazy things, minds drift and innocence lost. Your girlfriend will leave you, you're introduced to the other side of the world. In a Jarhead, you get your moneys worth, a down and dirty fighter capable of doing the enemy of this nation, and willing to give it all up for your freedoms. It ain't always pretty, but the Jarhead is protecting you in your cozy snug world at home.
