Harry and Larry, have either of you ever considered going back today? I usually always ask that question. It gets mixed reviews. We were going thru the edge of this ville in Quang Ngai, moving up 10yds and then stopping. These kids had gathered round staring at us and the Marine behind me told them he felt sorry for them. He said he'd leave someday, but they were there for life. The kids smiled, not knowing a word he said. But it was aprapo perhaps. A very dificult life but we didn't take the time to size the big picture up because we might be part of the big picture before tours end. There was a barber stand outside the wire of hill 37 and of course we blew it away at night ever so often. The barber would return in the morning on his bike pulling two carts and corragated tin and rebuild. Tough people in a tough land. He would always try to shave my cheeks and forehead with this old dull blue blade. They should have put him to work at PI or MCRD.

The war we wanted to escape and can never forget. I remember digging holes in front of this artillery base, Camp Carroll it became I think. This was early stages in Quang Tri, the rockpile, Cam Lo, Dong Ha, Mutters Ridge. My ears would ring the entire next day. In a drizzling rain you could "fire mission" ring out from behind us and the continuing cannon fire thru out the night. It was like thunder in a distance when they landed.
