You can , or could (not sure how it works these days) drink anything you chose to drink off duty in the Army.Nobody asked for IDs on a military base or Vietnam.I suppose you could even drink at 17 1/2 if you chose to, that was minimum service age. If I was a law maker I would allow anyone with a miltary ID to drink at any age offbase. However, that is out of fairness to sevice people who may risk their lives for their country, not because I would encourage young people to drink.Drinking can lead to serious problems in life, sometimes you don't notice the link until you're older.
