Howdy Edward;

The only homepage for the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment ("Gimlets") that I could find is at http://www.military.com/HomePage/UnitCreatedPage/0%2C11003%2C100392%2C00.html . There is no Paul Auerbach listed on their roster of found members. One thing has me confused though. According to the regimental history of the 21st Inf. which is posted on that website, only the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the 21st Inf. served in Vietnam and they were both with the 196th LIB, Americal (23rd Infantry) Division.

The order-of-battle of the U.S. Army in the Republic of Vietnam is at http://www.gruntonline.com/Order%20of%20Battle/US%20Army/us_army_oob1.htm and I could find no mention of the 1st/21st Inf. there, but they do mention that the 1st Battalion, 21st Field Artillery Regiment (105 mm howitzers) served with the 3rd Bde., 1st Cavalry Division.

Are you sure of the unit designation? If so, what brigade or division was the 1st/21st Inf. assigned to? Quang Tri and Phu Bai are located pretty far north between Hue and the DMZ in I Corps (see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapne4816.html ). The only Army units located that far north that I'm aware of were elements of the 101st Airborne Div. and the 1st Bde., 5th Infantry Div. (Mechanized).
