Helen, I am no expert by any means, but I put ashes from our wood stove and DE in the places they do their dust baths. Never had a mite problem except for some silkie chickens I bought once.

Sorry i did have to laugh at your peas being upset by your dad's remote control plane! i have had my two boys for four months and only now are they just begining to get used to the planes overhead - i live on the London Gatwick flight path so the poor things have had to get used to it! As for mites, I have an open fire for ash but what is DE?

Diatomaceous Earth, do a google on it. It's tiny fossils that have sharp edges to pierce and dry our soft bodied bugs, but do not harm the birds. I have even dusted my finch when he acted funny like he might have bugs. I bought it from a seed supply company on line, but had to get a huge bag, I think maybe you could get it on EBay
